Gonzalez & Jacobson Architecture develops a preliminary interior design concept for Gibraltar Cable Car. A journey from earth to man.

The Rock of Gibraltar originated 21 million years ago in the Lower Miocene. Formed by the collision of Iberian and African plates, Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks emerged from skeletal remains accumulating on the seabed, later uplifted. Climate, wind, rain, and erosion sculpted the Rock’s grooves, cavities, tunnels, and caves.

These caves housed early settlers. Phoenicians and Romans arrived, and in the Middle Ages, the Rock became a crucial stronghold for various cultures, from Muslims to Christians.

Today at contemporary stage, Gibraltar’s Rock symbolises modernity and technological progress.

In redesigning Gibraltar Cable Car, Gonzalez & Jacobson Architecture aimed to capture this journey. The design not only showcases the Rock’s architectural evolution but also prompts reflection on the intertwining of history, nature, and technology.

The architectural project of the Gibraltar Cable Car spans from the cable car’s base to its summit. Multiple levels with rich finishes, textures, and illustrative displays will transform the Rock visit into a sensory experience and a spectacular historical journey.
