At Gonzalez & Jacobson Architecture, the term “Architecture for Living Outdoors” is highly considered when designing. This concept is increasingly present in contemporary homes, especially in climates like the Mediterranean, where conditions allow for enjoying the outdoors for much of the year. This approach, adopted by the Marbella-based architecture studio, promotes a fluid connection between interior and exterior, through spaces such as terraces, porches, and gardens that are not mere complements, but an essential part of the architectural project.
The reference images included in this post are from the preliminary design for a luxury villa in La Zagaleta, Benahavis, Malaga, developed by Gonzalez & Jacobson Architecture, Cogitari Homes, and Any Architects.
Among the key elements for incorporating this concept into Gonzalez & Jacobson’s design concepts are:
- Open or semi-covered terraces: adding these as extensions of the living room or bedrooms, conceived as an additional space. Designed for dining, relaxing, or socializing, they often incorporate pergolas, awnings, or movable louvers to control sunlight. In the luxury villas designed by Gonzalez & Jacobson, these terraces often feature Jacuzzis, outdoor fireplaces, and outdoor barbecues.
- Porches or covered terraces: These are defined as covered spaces that are open along their perimeter and provide protection from the sun and rain, acting as an indoor-outdoor transition. They are often part of the main façade and are ideal for creating permanent, shaded outdoor living areas. Their design directly influences the architectural image of the building (materials, proportions, pillars, etc.).
- Gardens: These are usually designed as habitable landscapes (paths, lawns, structured vegetation, etc.). They typically include reflecting pools, fountains, pools, or fire pits as central elements. At Gonzalez & Jacobson, considering the visual and functional relationship with the interior (views from the living room or kitchen, direct access, etc.) is very important.
Gonzalez & Jacobson Architecture designs seek to establish a connection between the interior and exterior spaces, and above all, with the surroundings, with the environment encompassing the building. An integration that undoubtedly improves the quality of life for its inhabitants.
