Alvar Aalto designed this vase in 1936, as part of the decoration of a restaurant, later going on to be exhibited in Paris, at the 1937 World’s Fair, and since then becoming one of the icons of Scandinavian design.
Made of blown glass, versions are made in different sizes and colours, the wavy shapes, seemingly capricious, being a recurring feature in Aalto’s work, which, curiously, means “wave” in Finnish.
