The architecture firm Gonzalez & Jacobson is thrilled to share the news today regarding the start of renovations to the new cable car facilities in Gibraltar, for which interior architecture they are responsible. A challenge at great heights.
Farewell trip of the cable car before the start of construction. This is the headline of GBS News’ article on January 7, 2026.
“Today marked the end of an era for the cable car: a final ceremonial trip to the Mons Calpe Suite before the work begins in earnest”…
Fabian Picardo (Minister of Gibraltar) was accompanied by members of the Gaggero family, who have operated the cable car via MH Bland since its inauguration by John Gaggero in 1966.

Sixty years after its inception and the first cable car journey, a chapter in the cable car’s history closes. Now a new era begins, with an incredible architectural project.
For 15 years this renovation project has been developing and refining to improve the facilities in every aspect.
Some minor works began at the upper station last year, and currently, work is underway on dismantling the carriages and cables and properly demolishing the upper and lower station buildings.
Gonzalez & Jacobson Architecture, architects in Marbella, Málaga, are especially proud to be involved. Knowing that the project is progressing is FANTASTIC news.
