Architecture that flows with the environment. Stepped homes

González & Jacobson Architecture, together with Cogitari Homes and Any Architechts, are currently constructing  EL Madroñal architectural project.

The images and plans presented here correspond to this project, where contemporary homes designed on different levels are one of the most intelligent and attractive solutions for sloping terrain, especially in areas like the Costa del Sol, Málaga.

The slope can become a great architectural asset. These homes are organized on different platforms or levels, adapting to the topography of the land instead of aggressively altering it.

This type of construction offers several technical advantages compared to other homes designed on steep terrain:

  • Less earthmoving → reduced cost and impact on the land.
  • Better structural adaptation → more efficient stepped foundations.
  • Optimized natural drainage.
  • Integration with the environment → less visual impact.

But where they truly stand out is in their architectural value:

  • More dynamic spaces: double-height ceilings, cross views, and interesting pathways.
  • Greater privacy between different areas of the house.
  • Privileged views from different levels.
  • Indoor-outdoor connection on each floor (terraces, gardens, patios).

The architecture firm González & Jacobson in Marbella concludes that when the land is sloping, the design rises; the structure doesn’t sit flat on the ground but adapts to the incline. Multi-level homes not only blend into the landscape, they enhance it: connected spaces, unique views, and an architecture that flows with the surroundings.
