Red tiles are still present in Mediterranean architecture, as Gonzalez & Jacobson Architecture has considered in the development of a project for a sloping roof villa in Marbella.
Red tiles are one of the most commonly used materials for roof coverings, especially in areas with traditional and Mediterranean architecture. They are generally made of baked clay (ceramic tiles), and their characteristic red colour comes from the mineral composition of the clay. These tiles are known for their warm aesthetics, resistance and ability to integrate into different architectural styles. Many of the architectural projects developed on the Costa del Sol, Malaga with a Mediterranean design maintain the presence of the tile.
The main physical characteristics of this material are: its weather resistance capacity (they resist extreme weather conditions well), its impermeability (they are naturally waterproof when well baked, thus avoiding water leaks), its durability (they can last more than 50 years if properly maintained) and its thermal and acoustic insulation (they help maintain a stable temperature inside the building, thus reducing energy consumption).
In terms of aesthetics, its warm and natural color is associated with Mediterranean, colonial and rustic architecture.
Red tiles have many advantages over other materials used in roof construction, as they have a very long lifespan, are easy to maintain, are non-combustible in the event of a fire and are considered very sustainable as they are made from natural elements, thus being recyclable.
In contrast, we are faced with a material with a high initial cost. In addition, they are considerably heavy, are quite fragile against any impact and their color fades over time in mostly sunny climates. In conclusion, red tiles are a classic and functional roofing material, combining aesthetics, durability and protective properties. Although their initial cost may be high, the longevity and thermal benefits make them a profitable investment in the long term.
Between tastes and colours, architecture has something for everything and each architectural style has its cliché. Taking advantage of each one is the vision of the Gonzalez & Jacobson architecture firm in Marbella.
