Villa site placement and adaptation to the terrain

Among many other factors, one of the most crucial aspects in the design of a home for González & Jacobson Architecture is the relationship between the architecture and the topography of the land.

In the case of this villa in La Zagaleta, Benahavis, Malaga, the steep slope of the plot has been a key element in defining the site placement and spatial organization of the complex within the architectural project and, consequently, on the land.

The house is arranged on a series of stepped platforms that follow the natural geometry of the terrain. This strategy reduces the impact of earthworks and, at the same time, creates a sequence of interconnected outdoor spaces. Terraces, gardens, and water features are articulated at different levels, creating a gradual transition between the architecture and the landscape.

The main volume of the house is located at the highest point, from where the views of the natural surroundings are commanded. From this point, the project unfolds downwards through different architectural elements that house leisure areas, a swimming pool, and complementary outdoor spaces. This arrangement allows each level to have its own relationship with the landscape and open spaces.

The fragmentation of the volumes also helps adapt the scale of the house to its surroundings. Instead of a single compact block, the house is composed of distinct volumes connected by terraces, staircases, and exterior pathways, creating an architecture more integrated with the topography.

In this way, for the González & Jacobson architecture studio, the project not only responds to a high-quality residential program but also transforms the site’s conditions into an opportunity to enrich the spatial experience of the house and its relationship with the La Zagaleta landscape.
